The Zambia Super League will resume on July 18 after nearly four months of suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) announced.
According to the FAZ, the remaining matches will all be played without fans as the season will kick off with the completion of the outstanding games. At the time of suspension, a maximum of 25 games had been played.
Following the completion of the games in hand, the league will continue with match day 26 on August 1 and the season will run until August 30.
President Edgar Lungu announced in June that football will resume in July starting with the Super League and National Division One subject to strict guidelines laid down by the Ministry of Health.
FAZ President Andrew Kamanga had always maintained that the best decision was to see the season to completion, particularly of the Zambia Super League.
Kamanga said that he did not wish to take the determination of the conclusion of the season out of the players’ hands given how close the title race in the top league is with about 10 games left.
Forest Rangers lead the league with 46 points from their 24 games, followed by Napsa Stars (45 from 25), Green Eagles (44 from 24), Nkana (43 from 24) and Zesco United (42 from 24). Forest Rangers are chasing their maiden league title.
Following the conclusion of the league, the 2020 ABSA Cup will resume on September 8. Pre-quarterfinal matches will be completed first while the final will be contested on September 16.
