U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Maj. Richard D. Thresher has been selected to be the command senior enlisted leader of U.S. Africa Command.

He replaces Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Ramon Colon-Lopez, who left his post last month having served as the command senior enlisted leader for AFRICOM since September 2016.

Thresher is currently assigned as the II Marine Expeditionary Force sergeant major, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Colon-Lopez was appointed Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and assumed his duties in mid-December.

Colon-Lopez handed over his responsibilities during a relinquishment of responsibility ceremony in November last year in Stuttgart, Germany.

Command Master Chief Ryan P. Burton of the U.S. Navy is currently the acting Command Senior Enlisted Leader of AFRICOM.

the U.S. Defense Department uses AFRICOM for military relations with African nations, the African Union, and African regional security organizations.
