The United Kingdom announced that it will donate $1.45 million towards supporting the education of vulnerable children in Kenya during the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the British High Commission, the donation will go directly into the salaries of 1,300 teachers who are educating children in refugee-hosting communities.
The teachers who are set to benefit, for a seven month period, are those in Dadaab, Kakuma, and Kalobeyi refugee camps.
The aid was announced at a high-level virtual summit hosted on Monday by Angelina Jolie, Special Envoy for UNHCR also attended by Kenya’s Acting Director Primary Education, Ms. Nereah Olick.
“COVID-19 has presented all our societies with huge challenges, and it’s vital we support those most in need. The UK is proud to help vulnerable refugees in Kenya gain an education, as we build back better after this pandemic,” Jane Marriott, the British High Commissioner to Kenya said.
The fund Kenya will receive is part of $6.6 million in UK aid which will be distributed to 5,669 teachers in 10 refugee-hosting countries including South Sudan, Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda, Chad, Malawi, Mauritania, Pakistan and Yemen.
