Rwandan club Gasogi United signaled its intent to improve its performances in the domestic top-flight after recruiting André Casa Mbungo as its head coach.

Mbungo’s deal with Gasogi, who finished ninth in the 16-team Rwanda Premier League, runs up until the end of the 2020/2021 season.

Mbungo’s appointment came shortly after he left fellow Rwandan club Rayon Sports, who he joined in February. He oversaw four league games before the season was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic and eventually cancelled.

The 51-year-old told Kenyan publication Nairobi News that Rayon informed him that they would not be renewing his contract.

“My focus is here now. It is a newly promoted team but very ambitious. We want to win things here,” he said in an interview.

His focus is an ambitious task to get the side into a consistent top-four position and the former goalkeeper said that he will prepare for that ahead of the start of the new season.

“I am very aware of the huge task ahead, so we need to work hard and improve as a team before the league starts because in August we will start training. I have been asked to build a consistent team that can play and win as any other top-four side; that is what I am going to do,” he said.

Gasogi, then coached by Guy Bukasa, who is now at Rayon Sports, were nine points off Mukura Victory Sports in fourth place last season at the time of the league’s suspension.

“We are setting up an ambitious target for us next season and we have to prepare adequately for it. With no doubt, it will be tough to achieve, but it does not make it impossible,” he added.

Though no date for the start of the new season has been set, local publication The New Times, reported that it could start in October.

Mbungo has previously managed other Rwandan clubs AS Kigali, SC Kiyovu and Police, and Kenyan club AFC Leopards.
