Nigerian defender Leon Balogun joined Scottish giants Rangers on a one-year deal with an option for an extension.

Balogun was a free agent after his contract with English side Wigan Athletic ended at the conclusion of the season. Balogun had joined Wigan on loan in January ended up signing a short-term deal until the season’s end.

Wigan was relegated from the EFL Championship following a 12-point deduction for going into administration.

The 32-year-old said he was eager to begin the next stage of his career at Rangers noting that he was happy to have been in action for the last few weeks rather than struggling to regain fitness after a lengthy time out.

“The league starts next week, so I am looking forward to joining the squad and integrating as quickly as possible,” Balogun said on Rangers website.

Balogun, who has won 32 caps for Nigeria, has previously played for Mainz 05, Werder Bremen, Fortuna Dusseldorf and Darmstadt in Germany and Brighton and Hove Albion in England.
