A late own goal by Mohamed Nadi saw Pyramids F.C. snatch a late 2-1 win against 10-man Smouha in the Egyptian Premier League on Friday at the Haras El-Hodod Stadium in Alexandria.
Smouha failed to capitalize on an early advantage when striker Hossam Hassan missed a fifth-minute penalty.
Pyramids, who were the better side in the first half, went ahead nine minutes before halftime through Ibrahim Adel.
Smouha came out stronger in the second half and despite seeing less of the ball, leveled the game four minutes after the restart through Emomo Eddy Ngoyi. Smouha kept on pressing but were thwarted by Pyramids goalkeeper Ahmed El Shenawy who denied them thrice.
Smouha were then dealt a blow late in the game when defender Mohamed Abdelmoneim was dismissed for a second yellow card.
Pyramids were then handed another lucky break as Nadi turned the ball into his own net in the fourth minute of added time as the match seemed destined for a draw.
The win saw Pyramids climb above Zamalek and Arab Contractors into second place. Pyramids have 39 points, the same number as Zamalek, who have an inferior goal difference.
Meanwhile, an own goal by Ahmed El Shemy condemned Arab Contractors to a narrow 1-0 defeat to 10th-placed Aswan S.C at the Aswan Stadium in Aswan. A win would have sent Arab Contractors (37 points) second, one point clear of Pyramids and Zamalek.
In the other match, first half goals from Rami Sabri and Ali Ahmed earned Enppi a 2-0 win against El-Entag El-Harby at the Al Salam Stadium in Cairo.
Enppi moved up to 6th place on 29 points while El-Entag El-Harby remained in eighth on 24 points.
