Morocco on Sunday reported its highest single-day increase in new COVID-19 infections as Africa’s cases continue to rise.
The North African country registered 698 additional infections in 24 hours, its highest since the disease was reported in the country in early March.
The new figures bring the country’s total tally to 14,132 infections and 234 deaths, according to the health ministry.
Having taken a battering due to the resultant restrictions imposed by the government to curb the spread of the disease, Morocco eased the measures on 25 June.
The government allowed restaurants, cafes, hotels and sports halls to reopen.
Domestic travel was also domestic tourism to resume, as well as inter-city travel.
Continentally, Africa has now reported more than 463,000 COVID-19 cases and over 11,000 deaths, according to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.
