The Moroccan authorities foiled on Saturday an attempt to smuggle 15 kg and 887 grams of cocaine at the northern port of Tangier-Med.

According to a statement by the Moroccan police, the banned substance was packed inside the rear bumper of a car which arrived at the port from France.

The driver, a 35-year-old Belgium of Moroccan origin, was arrested, the statement said.

The suspect was remanded in police custody to complete the investigation under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office.

The Moroccan police seized 542 kg of cocaine in 2019, down from 1.65 tons in 2018, according to official statistics.
