Hand-weaving in Ethiopia dates back centuries, and the craft is passed down through the generations. The woven cloth is used to make traditional clothing. But as Ethiopia modernises, younger generations are choosing not to pursue this trade. Ermias Tilahun (Er-mee-us Tila-hoon) is a traditional weaver who is trying to keep this ancient craft alive. The techniques he uses have not changed, but his designs experiment with colour, material, and pattern. Let’s take a look.
