Two Kenyan Members of Parliament on Tuesday engaged in a fist fight in the capital Nairobi in what seems to have been due to political allegiances.
The two, Paul Ongili and Charles Njagua, are both new legislators representing constituencies in Nairobi.
The fight erupted in Parliament’s media center as an afternoon session was ongoing, and had to be stopped by present journalists who were following the proceedings.
While Njagua is allied to the ruling Jubilee party, Ongili is a member of the opposition ODM party that is part of the NASA coalition.
Local Nation newspaper reports that the fight started after Njagua walked into the media center asking for Ongili’s whereabouts.
After engaging in the scuffle and ultimately being separated, the two were whisked away by the parliamentary orderlies.
They are expected to appear before the Powers and Privileges Committee, where they risk being suspended from attending House sittings for some time.
Kenya is gearing up for a fresh presidential election following the nullification of the August 8 poll bythe Supreme Court.
The new vote is scheduled to take place on October 26.
