Udinese edged closer to safety after securing a shock 2-1 come-from-behind win against defending champions Juventus at the Dacia Arena in Udine on Thursday.

Côte d’Ivoire midfielder Seko Fofana broke away to score a brilliant solo goal in the 92nd minute as Juventus tried to push for a winning goal.

The champions had taken the lead in the 42nd minute through Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt who rifled in a low shot from just outside the penalty box as a lively first half ended 1-0.

The hosts leveled the game six minutes after the restart through Ilija Nestorovski who powered in a diving header past Juve goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny.

As Juventus went in search for a winner that would have seen them clinch a ninth straight Serie A title, Fofana collected the ball on the halfway line and went on a strong run which saw him hold off Danilo’s challenge and get past de Ligt to slot the ball under Szczesny.

It was Fofana’s second goal since the league resumed in June and only his third in the league this season.

Udinese climbed up to 15th with 39 points, seven clear of Lecce in 18th with three games to go. Juventus, meanwhile, remain top of the table with 80 points, six clear of Atalanta.

Juventus who face Sampdoria on Sunday need a win to secure the title while Udinese faces Cagliari on the same day.
