Chinese President Xi Jinping exchanged congratulatory messages on Sunday with his Ghanaian counterpart Nana Akufo-Addo, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Ghana.

In his message, President Xi noted that since the establishment of bilateral diplomatic ties 60 years ago, the traditional friendship between China and Ghana has become stronger thanks to pragmatic cooperation that yielded fruitful results.

President Xi said the relations between China and Ghana have shown sound momentum for all-round development in recent years, which brings tangible benefits to the two peoples.

Since the COVID-19 outbreak, President Xi said China and African countries, including Ghana, have stood together in the common struggle against the disease, which underlines the fraternal friendship between China and Africa, which they share in good and bad times.

Emphasizing that he attaches great importance to developing bilateral relations, President Xi said he is ready to work with President Akufo-Addo, to seize the 60th anniversary as an opportunity to push forward traditional friendship and deepen cooperation in various fields, under the joint construction of the Belt and Road, and within the framework of the China Cooperation Forum – African, for the benefit of the two countries and their peoples, and contribute to building a closer China-Africa community with a common future.

For his part, President Akufo-Addo pointed out that the older generation of leaders from both sides, including the late Ghanaian President Kwame Nkrumah, the late Chinese President Mao Zedong and the (late Chinese) Premier Xu Enlai jointly established and nurtured the friendly relations between Ghana and China.

During the past 60 years, the two countries have maintained close high-level exchanges, achieved remarkable results in cooperation in various fields, and worked together to build a peaceful, just and equitable international order, he said.

Noting that President Xi had shown extraordinary leadership in responding to the COVID-19 epidemic, President Akufo-Addo said China had won global recognition for its help and support to countries around the world, including Ghana, in fighting the virus.

He added that Ghana strongly supports efforts to combat the Covid-19 epidemic through international solidarity and cooperation.

President Akufo-Addo expressed his willingness to work with President Xi to enhance traditional friendship, strengthen strategic coordination and deepen bilateral cooperation.
