A building collapsed in the Ebute-Metta area of Nigeria’s commercial capital Lagos on Friday, local media reported.
An unknown number of people are trapped under the rubble of the building. According to a resident who spoke to Xinhua, the collapsed building had shops and other residential apartments.
Several emergency response teams were reported to be at the scene, including the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and federal and state fire services.
Local publication Vanguard News reported that a woman was rescued from the debris and rushed to hospital.
The cause of the collapse is yet to be determined.
This incident comes barely two weeks after a three-story building collapsed at Freeman Street on Lagos Island killing three people.
Nigeria has fallen victim to building collapses in recent years. This phenomenon has been blamed mainly on poor enforcement of building regulations and the use of substandard materials.
