English fourth-tier club Carlisle United confirmed the signing of South African midfielder Dean Furman on a deal until the end of the season.

Furman’s former club SuperSport United confirmed in May that both parties had reached a mutual agreement to part ways due to his desire to move back to England to be closer to his family.

Furman’s contract at the club was due to end in June but he was adamant about his decision to leave despite the possibility of the Absa Premiership’s resumption after suspension.

The 32-year-old spent five successful seasons with SuperSport United winning two MTN8 trophies and two Nedbank Cups and a runners-up medal in the CAF Confederation Cup in 2017.

Carlisle manager Chris Beech expressed his delight at securing Furman’s services adding that he could be an “excellent signing” for the club.

“Dean will one hundred percent help to improve our other midfield players through the application of his work, and that’s a huge plus for me. We’ve got some real talent in the building and I’m excited to see that progress,” Beech said.

“Dean’s on the older side of players we’ve recruited this summer at 32, with it typically being the young energy we’ve gone for, but nevertheless he’s one that’s in fantastic shape, super fit, and usually tops the stats in terms of distances covered in training, game retains and regains during the time he’s been with us.”

Furman has also played for English clubs Bradford City, Oldham Athletic and Doncaster Rovers and Scottish giants Rangers.

Furman has also represented South Africa since 2012 winning 56 caps.
