AU condemns DR Congo killings as “shameful”

African Union officials say the Democratic Republic of Congo government must do more to protect United Nations and AU personnel deployed in the country.

Even so, the continental body’s officials concede that the region where the killing of UN investigators happened looks to be spiraling out of Kinshasa’s control.

Up to 400 people have been killed in Kasai in the past eight months. Just last weekend, 39 police officers were found beheaded, and the unrest is spreading.

The AU is convinced the country’s political leaders hold the key to ending the troubles. It wants elections held before the end of the year.

The government and opposition rivals have yet to agree on terms to pave way for the elections.

There have been more political protests in Kinshasa this week, and there is threat of more to come.

Officials at the AU are warning of some very difficult months ahead.
