Riyad Mahrez’s stoppage time goal against Nigeria on Sunday wrote a new record for the highest number of goals scored in an Africa Cup of Nations tournament.
The Algerian forward’s goal was the 100th in the 2019 competition, surpassing the record set in 2008, which saw 99 goals scored.
The 100 goals that have been scored so far came from 70 different players.
68 goals came in the group stage of the competition, with 32 coming in the knockout phase.
Nigeria’s Odion Ighalo leads the scoring chart with four goals, and a chance to extend his lead in Wednesday’s third-place play off.
Four players have found the back of the net three times, including Senegal’s Sadio Mane and Algerian duo of Riyad Mahrez and Adam Ounas.
AFCON 2019 – which is the first expanded tournament from 16 to 24 teams – has seen 15 players score braces.
The Desert Foxes have scored the highest number of goals in the tournament, with 12 goals so far, having conceded only two.
Fellow finalists the Teranga Lions also have something to smile about, as they are the best defensive side so far, having conceded only one goal.
Burundi and Guinea Bissau are the only teams that failed to find the back of the net in all their games. Each played three games before being knocked out in the group stage.
Out of the 50 games played so far, AFCON 2019 has seen 165 yellow cards and five red cards brandished.
