Kenya’s Impressive Jemimah Sumgong wins country’s first Olympic Gold

Kenya’s Jemima Sumgong has won the Olympics women’s marathon to become the country’s first ever winner of the event at the Summer Games.

Sumgong crossed the finish line in a time of 2:24:04, ahead of Bahrain’s Eunice Kirwa and Ethiopia’s Mare Dibaba to land the East African country not only her first gold at the Rio Olympics but also her first gold ever in an Olympics women’s marathon event.

Kirwa finished nine seconds behing Sumgong, with Dibaba clocking in 26 seconds behind the winner.

Kenya is expected to win more trophies as more track events are held.
