50 killed and thousands displaced by Cyclone in Madagascar
Officials in Madagascar say that a cyclone that has wreaked havoc on the island nation has claimed the lives of at least 50 people.
More than 195 people have been injured and 20 reported missing. 84,660 people have been displaced and an estimated 295,950 people affected by the natural catastrophe according to the report by Madagascar’s National Bureau for Risk Management and Natural Disasters (BNGRC).
Officials have opened 137 shelters to house those hit by the cyclone. Food and water are in short supply and some areas have no electricity.
Red Cross has deployed 500 volunteers to help the 176 000 islanders who are known to have been affected by the storm so far.
Enawo hit Madagascar last week.
“The remnants of Intense Tropical Cyclone Enawo exited Madagascar on the morning of Friday 10 March 2017. The storm traversed nearly the length of the island over two days, affecting communities from north to south across Madagascar’s eastern and central regions” says report by BNGRC and the Humanitarian Country Team in Madagascar.
