
Zanzibar bans street food over cholera outbreak
Zanzibar, Tanzania’s semi-autonomous archipelago has banned street food vendors due to an outbreak of cholera.
Poor sanitation has caused floods after the heavy rains last month leading to the break out according to the Island’s acting Minister of Health and Social Welfare.
“We are encouraging people in their localities to observe hygiene and take precautions on the disease as well as ensuring that once they diagnose someone with symptoms of cholera to take him/her to the nearby health facility for treatment,” said acting Minister of Health and Social Welfare in Zanzibar Riziki Pemba Juma.
Zanzibar’s government also restricted people from inviting others over or sharing the evening meal after fasting during the holy month of Ramadan that is ongoing. It is common for muslims to invite friends and those less fortunate to share in the evening meal.
At least 23 new cases of cholera have been reported in the area.68 people died out of 4,330 who were infected with the disease in 2016.
