Zambian opposition leader allowed to challenge prosecution over treason charges
Zambian opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema has been allowed by a court in the country to challenge the prosecution from moving his treason case to the high court for trial.
Hichilema’s case has stirred political tension months after the country’s presidential elections I which he lost to President Edgar Lungu.
The United Party for National Development (UPND) leader was arrested in a police raid on his home in April and charged with trying to overthrow the government. This came after his convoy refused to give way to the president’s convoy as both leaders were travelling to attend a function.
Hichilema’s lawyers however said the case should not proceed to the High Court.
Magistrate David Simusamba told a packed hearing his court that Hichilema’s lawyers could seek a judicial review of the charges, before the case is handed over to the High Court for trial.
Hichilema refuted the results of the August elections, saying the vote was marred by irregularities.
