Zambian Vice-President Inonge Wina on Thursday called for enhanced efforts to end violence against children.

The Zambian vice-president said children require a safe and peaceful environment to grow and develop into responsible members of society.

Speaking when she officiated at an inter-ministerial dialogue on ending violence against children, the Zambian vice-president noted the urgent need to increase protection actions and ensure that the country shares best practices in the establishment of one-stop centers to handle violence against children in an expeditious manner.

She further directed the ministry responsible for children’s affairs to ensure that the Children’s Code Bill was taken to parliament.

According to her, the Children’s Code Bill was critical to ensuring that children enjoyed their rights while protecting them from any form of abuse.

She revealed that efforts to domesticate the United Nations (UN) Convention on the Rights of the Child have taken longer because of failure to establish the Children’s Code Bill.

World Health Organization (WHO) Country Representative Nathan Bakyaita called for the establishment of an inter-sectoral approach in ending violence against children.

He further pledged the UN’s continued support to the Zambian government’s efforts in ending violence against children.
