Zambia’s electoral body on Tuesday announced the postponement of the commencement of a voter registration exercise ahead of next year’s general elections.

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) was scheduled to commence the voter registration exercise this week to run from Oct. 28 to Nov. 30, 2020. But Chief Electoral Officer Patrick Nshindano said the exercise has been postponed and will run from Nov. 9 to Dec. 12, 2020.

He told reporters during a press briefing that the postponement has been necessitated by the extension of the issuance of national identification documents, adding that the electoral body wanted to ensure that all eligible voters were captured in the voter registration exercise.

The electoral body, he said, does not want to disenfranchise eligible voters hence the decision to postpone the exercise.
