World reacts after President Robert Mugabe resigns
The curtains have finally fallen on the reign of Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe.
The 93-year-old leader, one of Africa’s longest serving, resigned on Tuesday evening following a military take-over last week.
Zimbabwe’s Parliament speaker Jacob Mudenda announced that he had received Mugabe’s resignation letter, with the house erupting in loud cheers.
The legislators had begun an impeachment process against the veteran leader, who had failed to step down on Sunday as demanded by the army.
Members of the ruling ZANU-PF party said the impeachment process would take as little as two days, meaning Mugabe would be removed by Wednesday.
Following that news, social media has been flooded with reactions from all over the world.
The excitement among most Zimbabweans is almost tangible on the social sites, as millions have lived all their lives under one reign, and were eager for change.
