The World Bank has endorsed the Kenya Primary Education Development Project under which Kenya will spend a grant of USD 88.4 million to improve the teaching of mathematics in class one and two from January 2016.
The endorsement is contained in a letter by Country Director for Kenya Diarietou Gaye, dated 18th July, 2015, to the Cabinet Secretary for National Treasury, Henry Rotich and copied to the Cabinet Secretary for Education, Prof. Jacob Kaimenyi.
The project will benefit 6 million pupils in grade 1 and 2 who will benefit from improved early grade mathematics textbooks
The funding is aimed at addressing key challenges in Kenya’s primary education sector as well as to provide help to areas not fully covered by other initiatives.
40,000 teachers will benefit from new methodologies of early grade mathematics instruction through improved in-service training and regular supervision and support with 1.3 million pupils in participating schools benefiting from more effective and present teachers.
Head teacher and Boards of Management will also benefit. They will receive guidance and support in school improvement planning and be empowered to implement plans to improve school performance.
The project aims at ensuring that all children master basic literacy and numeracy by early grades besides building national systems that have capacity and integrity to deliver, support and assess education quality.
