Windhoek is one of the world’s major centres for the karakul sheep-skin trade, a trade that was born out of sheep rearing in the country. After all sheep is a delicacy in the country, ‘Smileys’ sheep heads is a much loved local dish, along with mopane worms (highly nutritious and some regard it as truly delicious) and tripe (lining from the stomachs of various farm animals) a common delicacy across Africa.

The city is surrounded by a scenic nature where one can go for a game drive, cycling and nature walk. Beautiful lodges and farms offer interesting activities. It also has a vibrant night life with colour cocktails, local beers and spirits being offered in joints.

Windhoek is not a big city and is eminently walkable; add to this a mixed population, a pedestrian-friendly city centre, a relaxed, relatively hassle-free pace and an utterly cosmopolitan outlook and Windhoek makes for a very pleasant exploration indeed. Neo-baroque cathedral spires, as well as a few seemingly misplaced German castles, punctuate the skyline, and complement the steel-and-glass high-rises according to the Lonely Planet
