Weapons, Explosives Seized In Mogadishu
Somali police have seized an assortment of weapons and explosives in a counter-terrorism raid aimed at securing the capital Mogadishu, security authorities said.
Interior Security Ministry spokesman Mohamed Yusuf told journalists on Thursday evening that a police swoop in the capital’s Daynile district led them to a house which had weapons heaped in a pit, and arrested several people suspected to be members of the Al-Qaida linked militant group Al-Shabaab.
In a similar operation, Yusuf said police also netted a number of explosives and other arms in a car which they stopped in one of the city streets. The driver of the car was arrested by police.
“We are doubling up our efforts to ensure we rid the city off Al-Shabaab remnants,” said Yusuf.
Police have in the recent past conducted several operations in several parts of the city in a bid to enhance security following a number of attacks by Al-Shabaab.
