The National Election Commission has announced yesterday extension of hours of elections to seven O’clock over all the states of Sudan in response to demand by some States and parties representatives .
The spokesperson of the said commission Gen, AlHadi Mohamed Ahmed has disclosed in a press conference in Khartoum Yesterday that the poling days were extended for two days in more than (160) constituencies due to the delay of poling in these constituencies in the first day of the election process.
The poling was delayed in 152 constituencies in Gezira State due to mixing up ballot boxes between the constituencies in addition to the delay of voting in five constituencies in the state of Central Darfur in the National constituency Darsla due to the delay of delivery of poling cards.
Around 160 centres out of 7,100 nationwide were not able to open on the first day of polls because ballot papers and other materials did not arrive in time, National Election Commission spokesman Hadi Muhammad Ahmad told reporters in Khartoum.
He said there would be an investigation into the problems which affected voting in parts of Gezira state, south of Khartoum, and several stations in central Darfur.
The government says violence has also prevented several areas from voting in the country, such as in the war-torn South Kordofan state, where one of the largest rebel groups said last week it had captured a truckload of ballots to prevent polling taking place.
The voting has been postponed in 152 polling centres in Gezira State, 11 in Central Darfur, three in South Kordofan, three in West Kordofan, three in Sennar and one in Red Sea State, he explained.
