UNSOM officers in Somalia feted for their exemplary work
18 uniformed officers serving in Somalia have been feted for their contribution to the peace process in the wartorn country, over the past year. They have been working under the United Nations Assistance in Somalia docket. The award ceremony, the first of its kind, was attended by the Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General , Peter de Clercq, and personnel from the unit’s military, police and correction units.
“Your contribution and your country’s contribution, to the mission to move Somalia closer to peace and becoming a viable state is tremendously appreciated. You have served with commitment, and we trust that you will return home with a sense of pride for your service to the United Nations, to Somalia and to its people.” Peter De Clercq, Deputy Special Representative of The UN Secretary-General (DSRSG)
The officers were lauded for achieving their mandate of supporting the Federal Government of Somalia and the Somali people. UNSOM has representation from several countries across the world, who according to Acting Director of UNSOM, have assisted in delivering the institution’s mandate.

I am very proud to work for the UN as part of the team and I am also proud to represent my country since we are the first Finish officers here in Somalia.” Mia Touminen, UN Policy Advisor
The UNSOM unit, which was formed in 2013, has successfully engaged Somali leaders towards achieving national stabilization. It has also offered human rights support services, security and child protection across the volatile nation, over the years.
