The Acting Special Representative of the Secretary-General (ASRSG) for Libya and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Stephanie Williams, is in Egypt for talks with Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry over the situation in Libya.

The two leaders’ talks will be focused on seeking ways of achieving a comprehensive political settlement of the Libyan crisis.

The meeting comes after the North African country’s warring factions announced a ceasefire last week raising hopes for the achievement of lasting peace in the country.

The ceasefire was welcomed by the international community, as bodies such as the African Union and the United Nations called for its implementation.

Libya has been dogged by a civil war for years, sparked by the killing of former long-serving president Muammar Gadaffi.

The war has killed thousands and displaced hundreds of thousands as each faction claims legitimacy.

Forces loyal to the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA) under Fayez al-Sarraj and those under eastern commander Khalifa Haftar have been receiving support from various countries in their quest to take control of the country.
