Two police officers and one soldier killed in Uganda when armed men attempted to raid a police station in Uganda on Sunday, night local media reports.

There was heavy sporadic gunfire in the city of Gulu in Northern Uganda at the Gulu Central Police Station 9.00 pm bringing the bustling business in the town to a standstill.

“ One UPDF soldier was killed, 4 others injured and a few civilians.  We thus mourn the death of our comrade,” General Kayihura, the Inspector General of Police told journalists on Monday.

The police confiscated AK 47s, 12 rounds of ammunition, a bow and 8 arrows among other weapons after the criminals withdrew.

According to Gn. Kayihura the gunmen were attempting to rescue Uganda People’s congress party National deputy mobilizer in the region Dan Oola Diya from Gulu Central Police Station where he was being detained. Mr. Diya was arrested by the police last Wednesday for allegedly being linked to a raid in a trading centre that left a soldier and a five year old boy dead.

“We are glad that our officers managed to repulse the attackers before they could succeed to free Mr Odiya. We had earlier received intelligence reports of an eminent attack and deployed heavily,” Said Police commissioner and spokesman Fred Enanga

The police are now in pursuit of the unknown gunmen
