UK’s Sunak says Rwanda migrant flights will not take off before election

Read < 1 minute

Deportation flights to Rwanda will not leave before the election, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said Thursday in a local radio station interview.

In a change of plans to launch flights carrying asylum seekers in June, the prime minister said: “If I am re-elected as prime minister on July 5, these flights will go.”

The opposition Labour Party, however, has promised to scrap the scheme if it wins.

The British government has allocated 240 million British pounds (approximately 305 million U.S. dollars) to Rwanda under a controversial scheme.

This issue is expected to be a major point of contention between the two main political parties during the six-week election campaign.
