Uganda’s Opposition Democratic Alliance Dissolves
Uganda opposition parties have failed to back a single candidate for next year’s elections.
The Democratic Alliance, a coalition of all parties flopped after the failure to collectively unanimously decide to back one candidate. The opposition was to pick either three time presidential candidate Kizza Besiyge or the former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi.
It is likely that the two candidates will be vying for the presidential seat separately in the elections along with veteran leader Yoweri Museveni of the ruling party, National Resistance Movement (NRM).
Members of the six movements formed the Democratic Alliance, believing a united front will weaken Museveni’s chances of getting back into power after ruling the East African country for at least 30 years.
