Uganda’s Multi-sport Champion: Ali Yasser Omar conquering Motocross as well as Basketball

Read 2 minutes

A teenager in Uganda is making a name for himself on both the racing tracks and the basketball court. Ali Yasser Omar can ride, drive and also play basketball – and he is working his way towards being a champion at the three sports.

On the court, in the car… And on the bike. This is the sporting life of fourteen year old Ali Yasser Omar.

“I have always liked doing sports and you know when you do sports, you want to do more, and find out you are good at something – and you keep working on doing what you are good at,” Omar told CGTN Africa.

Omar’s love for sport has rubbed off on his siblings. All his brothers compete as well, but he insists they still have some catching up to do.

“They all know I am better than them, but soon when they all grow and get as old as I am, then maybe we shall have a little competition.”

Already, Omar has won national and regional championships in motocross. He is dominating in the buggy class this year. And while he has toyed with other sports like basketball, he still has no particular favorite.

“I have not made the decision, but I will take them and I will do all until the decision comes when I really have to make a choice.”

While Omar is spoilt for choice, his mother knows where she wants him and his brothers to be.

“I want to see them be a champion, a world champion. Not Africa, not Uganda because they have passed that, they have been champions in Uganda. I want to see them be international champions.” Omar’s mother, Janet, told CGTN Africa.

Omar says his main target is to one day win both the national motocross competitions, and maybe the rally and basketball titles too. He is determined to go all the way, and he is showing no sign of slowing down.
