Ugandan authorities have suspended the national boxing body over the disappearance of three players who had traveled to Germany for the World Boxing Championship.
Assistant General Secretary of the National Council of Sports, Patrick Ogwel, said the decision was taken after the executive of the Uganda Boxing Federation failed to explain the disappearance of the athletes.
“We are not going to accept this kind of management,” Xinhua news agency quotes Ogwel to say.
The three boxers were part of a team that traveled to Hamburg early September to represent Uganda in the 2017 AIBA World Championship.
“We have decided that the whole Federation executive members are suspended as investigations go on, following the failure of the boxers to return,” Ogwel announced.
The spokesperson of the boxing team is reported to have confirmed that the three athletes stayed behind to try and get new clubs.
Uganda’s minister of sports Charles Bakkabulindi said the government will set tough laws to clamp on organizations whose members fail to return after attending international events.
“We shall not accept this kind of behaviour because it has been happening in the past. The boxing body will now have to answer or get punished,” he said.
In 2010, two Ugandan rugby players disappeared after attending the Commonwealth Games in Scotland.
