Uganda’s total number of coronavirus cases rose to 12,743 after the Ministry of Health reported 248 new cases on Sunday.

Sunday’s figures are down from the 423 cases reported on Saturday, Uganda’s highest daily increase in cases since the outbreak began.

All the new cases reported from contacts and alerts, with the capital, Kampala, registering the highest number of cases with 89, followed by Wakiso (40), Lira (20), Mukono (11) and Busia (13).

The total number of recoveries rose to 7,556 after 53 more people recovered from the disease.

The ministry also reported one new death taking the nationwide death toll to 112.

Uganda has recorded a steady increase in coronavirus cases. Despite this, the government eased a number of COVID-19-related restrictions with President Yoweri Museveni arguing that the country could not perpetually remain under restrictions with the future of the economy at stake.
