Kenya’s Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi has launched a toll free number for the public to report malpractices taking place in the country’s schools.
Prof. Jacob Kaimenyi said the number will be used to report cases of hiked school fees, holiday tuitions and misappropriation of government resources by persons entrusted to manage them.
The number is an initiative of the Elimu Yetu Coalition (EYC) to enhance public participation and to improve accountability in the management of school resources.
Kaimenyi asked parents and other education stakeholders in the country to put teachers who breach school management guidelines to account.
He said holiday tuition, hiked school fees, corporal punishments, forced repetition of classes and wanton wastage of public resources are issues of concern.
Speaking at the launch of the number, EYC chairperson Janet Muthoni said that recent revelations that school heads had inflated enrollment figures by over 240,000 is testimony that theft of school resources is happening in Kenya.
She said the EYC shall gather data and collaborate with the Directorate of Secondary Education to ensure that appropriate action is taken to enforce full compliance with the guidelines.
