The honest Nigerian who handed over a money bag
What would you do if you came across a bag of money containing thousands of dollars at an airport?
Would you hand the money over to authorities or would you celebrate and call it your lucky day?
Money is tempting and so coming across a huge bundle becomes even tricky..the choice of weather to return or keep becomes difficult especially if one is need of the money.
However the decision was not a hard one for one Murtala international airport cleaner in Nigeria.
The story of Ms. Josephine Ugwu, the airport cleaner who returned N12 million found at the Lagos Airport toilet has been on the mouths of many people in Nigeria. 12 million Naira is equal to 60,000 dollars
Miss Ugwu has been awarded for what has been termed as exceptional honesty. She has been awarded with a “Citizens Responsibility Recognition” award for her display of honesty.
The Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mr. Mike Omeri, said the government was honouring her for doing the right thing; a conduct he said is in line with the new slogan of the agency.
He said the airport cleaner has redeemed the image of the country, which has been tainted by the conduct of a few Nigerians.
Omeri said the agency would not relent in rewarding Nigerians that have exhibited such honest conduct in the discharge of their duties.
He urged airport staff to continue to display such exemplary conduct which is the traditional way of life of Nigerians, adding that the airport cleaner has joined the league of other honest Nigerians including Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola of Lagos State, who was rewarded for apprehending a traffic offender.
So why did Miss Ugwu decide to hand over the money bag to the authorities? She says the mistake many people make is try to run faster than their shadow.
She says you can never overtake your shadow just go with its pace.
This is her story:
