Terror takes toll on Morocco’s tourism
The threat from Islamic extremism in North Africa is taking a toll on the region’s tourism.
Britain recently issued a travel warning for Morocco, which has already seen a slow down in bookings. The government is now trying to protect its lucrative tourism sector.
Morocco’s iconic Red City attracts hundreds of tourists every day and tourism is vital to the country’s economy.
A recent report by the Ministry of Tourism says nearly 3.5 million foreigners visited Morocco in the first five months of this year. As the economy’s second largest sector, tourism accounts for around eight percent of GDP, employing some half a million people.
