Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu outlines agriculture roadmap as trade surges

Tanzania is set to revolutionize its agricultural sector, as the government puts in place measures to make the country food secure.

Speaking during the Africa Agriculture Dialogue on Friday, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu unveiled a strategic roadmap focused on irrigation infrastructure, technology access, and market expansion for the sector.

According to President Samia, the initiatives are aimed at enabling the country build its capacity as a dependable food basket for the East African Community, with the potential to support other regions, including Southern Africa.

The Dialogue which was held on the sidelines of the World Food Prize held in Iowa, U.S.

The head of state indicated that a presidential advisory agricultural council had already been established to support the initiative.

“We are not there yet, but I assure you, we are on the right track,” she said during the event.

Tanzania is positioning itself as a major trade player on the continent, by also focusing on sectors such as education, infrastructure and technology.

Tanzania’s international trade has surged, reflecting the positive impact of her progressive policies. Trade volumes have experienced a striking 84 percent increase, rising from USD 17.4 billion to USD 31.4 billion in just over three years.

Exports have nearly doubled, from $8.4 billion to $15 billion, showcasing Tanzania’s growing reputation as a source of valuable goods and resources.
