For United Nations peacekeepers, the past five years has been the deadliest period in history. According to a December 2017 report, the U.N. flag no longer offers the natural protection it once did – and the missions in Africa are the most vulnerable.
Since 2013, an influx of armed groups, extremists and organised crime has led to 26 blue helmet casualties in Sudan, 29 in the Central African Republic, and 91 in Mali – and the report has called for better training, more technology and greater freedom for peacekeepers in response to these numbers
So how can the U.N. adapt to deal with this new climate of conflict? And what more can be done to make it safer for U.N. peacekeepers on the continent?
