Talk Africa: Africa’s response to COVID-19

It is a global pandemic of unprecedented scale, sparing no territory on the face of the earth. Since being declared a global pandemic in the second week of March, Covid-19 has now infected over 1 million people as at this week, with thousands of deaths registered globally according to the WHO.

Africa has so far suffered a relatively lower mortality rate compared to other regions in the world. However the continent is increasingly coming to terms with the dangers of Covid-19. The disease threatens to outstretch Africa’s health systems even as authorities struggle to enforce safety measures in a vibrant yet unique social context.

So what challenges does the war on Covid-19 face in Africa? And how is the continent responding in the wake of this unforeseen public enemy?
