Thousands riot in protest against elections in Kinshasa

Protestors took to the street in Congo for a second day to protest the constitutional change that would allow the president to run a third term. At least four people were killed yesterday’s protests when the police opened fire into the marching people.

The opposing people believe that President Sassou Nguesso is using the referendum on the constitution that will give the parliament a chance to extend the presidential term limits from two to three on Sunday to run for the presidential seat in next year’s elections.

Protestors marched towards the police station in the Southern district of Makelekele chanting words that are anti-government and saying ‘We will rise up’. The crowds burnt tyres and built barricades.

Army reinforcement was dispatched to support the police officers who were being weighed down by the crowd.

Three security forces have been seriously injured and houses of five politicians set ablaze. According to the Interior Minister Raymond Zephyrin Mboulou at least 16 people have been arrested from the Tuesday protests.
