Several heads of state have arrived in Sudan to witness the inauguration of re-elected sudanese president Omar al Bashir.
Among the presidents expected to attend the inauguration are Kenya’s president Uhuru Kenyatta, the presidents of Egypt, Chad, Eritrea, Somali, Djibouti, the Vice President of South Sudan, the Prime Minister of Ethiopia and the Leader of the Arab League among other dignitaries.
Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni is also expected to attend the ceremony, according to Sudan Foreign minister Ali Karti.
President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe who is the AU and SADC chairperson has already arrived in Sudan in readiness for the inauguration.
The swearing-in ceremony will be held at the National Assembly at Omburaman.
President Bashir has been in power since 1989 however this will be his second term since the cessation of Sudan from South Sudan in 2011 after a national referendum.
Meanwhile the opposition has denounced Bashir’s inauguration as president of the country for another five years.
President Bashir’s re-election for five more years came as no big surprise. He clinched a fresh mandate with a whooping 94 per cent vote.
Bashir’s ruling National Congress Party also won the parliamentary election with a comfortable 323 seats, out of the total 426.
Immediately after his victory, President Bashir took on the opposition with a stinging criticism, while vowing to end the rebellion in his country.
He cautioned the West to desist from interfering with Sudan’s internal affairs.
