South Sudan on Thursday reported its fifth confirmed coronavirus case, an official at the National Ministry of Health said.
The case, a South Sudanese national, was confirmed following tests conducted on persons traveling in and out of the capital Juba, according to Dr Gordon Angok a COVID-19 incident manager at the ministry.
“The fifth case is confirmed as a local transmission. We today tested some people who wanted to travel out of the state and one tested positive of the pandemic,” Dr Angok told regional publication, The East African.
The testing is a result of a policy formulated by a task force on COVID-19 in which people traveling from Juba to other states are tested in an attempt to contain the virus’ spread to rural areas. An individual is allowed to travel upon gaining a clearance licence.
South Sudan reported its first confirmed COVID-19 case on April 5; a United Nations staff aged 29 who arrived from the Netherlands via Addis Ababa on February 28.
