Peace talks to end the crisis in South Sudan continue in Ethiopia. East African leaders are gathered in Addis Ababa ahead of an August 17 deadline to form a unity government. But a deal seems unlikely, with South Sudanese President Salva Kiir not attending the talks after complaining it wasn’t possible to strike a deal because rebel forces have split. He’s sending his deputy instead. Regional mediators have been ramping up pressure for the two warring sides to meet ahead of the deadline. Disagreements over the power-sharing deal have seen round upon round of talks end in deadlock. At least 10 thousand people have been killed in the South Sudanese conflict.
