South Sudan, the world’s youngest country, is marking 4 years of independence today. Over the past week, hundreds of workers have been busy repairing roads and painting buildings in preparation for the festivities. But many expect the celebrations to be muted. Following a referendum to split from Sudan, South Sudan has been embroiled in months of conflict.
Financial experts are also warning that the country’s economy is dangerously on the verge of collapse. President Salva Kiir vowed in a speech to parliament Wednesday to restore peace in South Sudan, root out corruption and improve the lives of the people during his next three years in office.
