The president of South Africa has suspended the National Police Commissioner with immediate effect and on full salary as the country awaits the recommendations by the Board of Inquiry.
Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega who was appointed in 2012 has been released from active duty pending the outcome of the investigations into allegations of misconduct, fitness to hold office and capacity to execute official duties efficiently.
President Jacob Zuma did consider the response given to him by General Victoria Phiyega on 28 September 2015 where she made representations as to why he should not exercise the power conferred upon him under section 8(3)(a) of the South African Police Service Act, 1995, to suspend her pending the outcome of the Board of Inquiry and came to the decision to relieve her of active duty until investigations end
The commissioner has been under fire due to the Marikana massacre which left many miners dead
