South Africa’s M1 bridge collapse death toll rises
Three people were killed and around 20 others injured when scaffolding for a bridge under construction collapsed over Johannesburg’s main motorway on Wednesday.
The tangled wreckage of the metal bridge was sprawled across Johannesburg’s M1 highway near a busy ramp, leading to the Sandton financial district.
A witness quoted by Reuters said paramedics worked to free people from a mini-bus taxi that had been smashed up by the collapse.
The structure collapsed on Johannesburg’s busiest highway, just ahead of peak hour traffic, bringing traffic to a standstill.
Chaos ensued as people tried to change routes, while curious onlookers tried to get closer to the scene.
