South Africa’s Women Affairs Minister has reportedly slammed Zimbabwean First Lady Grace Mugabe over comments she made about women wearing miniskirts deserving to be raped.
News24 reports that Susan Shabangu, who spoke during an Activism Against Gender Based Violence breakfast sponsored by the publishers of the New Age in Johannesburg, said that Grace’s comments were “sad”.
Shabangu said that Grace was “in need of liberation”.
“We also need to understand, the issue of socialisation and training becomes very important. It doesn’t mean that those at the top are socially liberated [and] they understand. Some of them are so oppressed they need to be liberated. So it’s a reflection of a woman, because of the position she is occupying, who thinks she is liberated, but not,” Shabangu is quoted as saying.
The Zimbabwean First Lady sparked outrage last month after she made remarks that were deemed to insinuate that if women wore short skirts, they deserved to be raped.
According to The Telegraph, Grace, who is a mother of four, said this at a at a rally in Mberengwa, southern Zimbabwe.
“If you walk around wearing miniskirts displaying your thighs and inviting men to drool over you, then you want to complain when you have been raped?”, Grace was quoted as saying.
