South African deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa has arrived in South Sudan on a two state journey. He will visit Kenya tomorrow. The deputy president’s visit to Kenya and South Sudan comes against the background of efforts aimed at cementing lasting peace in South Sudan after the re-unification agreement was signed earlier this year.
The Presidency on Sunday said the Deputy President visits the countries in his capacity as Special Envoy of President Jacob Zuma to South Sudan. Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa on Monday took to the gathering at Kenya’s Madaraka Day (self-rule) celebrations to apologise for the “terrible moment” his country went through when a mob of youth targeted African immigrants.
“We want to demonstrate our unity as Africans for our continent. I would like to take this opportunity to apologise to Kenyans and indeed the African continent for the recent xenophobic attacks.
A Reunification Agreement signed in Arusha, Tanzania, early this year. The agreement was signed by the various factions of the SPLM. The agreement also seeks to address the political, organisational and leadership issues that caused the political crisis in the ruling party and South Sudan in general.Ramaphosa has been involved in a series of activities to help bring unity to Sudan, having met representatives of SPLM (Juba) and former detainees in April where consensus was reached on how best to strengthen and implement the Reunification Agreement. The meeting also impressed upon all SPLM members to remain focused on the reunification of the ruling party.
